Food, glorious food...
Some must try local food specialities include:
- Amok (fish steamed in coconut milk with many herbs and spices, generally served wrapped in a banana leaf).
- Cambodian curry, often served with chicken is extremely tasty and generally not too spicy.
- Beef Lok Lak, thinly sliced barebecued beef with pepper sauce often served with a fried egg on top.
- Barbecue restaurants where strips of meat are cooked on a small dome shaped barbeque on your table while your vegetables and noodles simmer away below.
- Prahok (paste made from preserved fish) can be an acquired taste, try it if you dare! It is a staple of Cambodia cuisine and takes on different features depending on the recipe such as Prahok Kties, it is fried with pork taken from the belly sides of the hog, which accentuates the flavor, particularly with the amazing quality of pork that Cambodian produces. It leaves you with an amazing taste on your plate.
- Tropical fruits such as tamarind, mangosteen, dragon fruit, mangoes, rambutan and pineapples are in abundance, and the stinky durian is the King of all fruits.
- Local street foods include barbecued meats, dumplings, sticky rice cooked in coconut milk and served in a bamboo tube or banana leaf, stuffed frogs, a huge variety of fried insects and lots more.
- Wash it all down with some local rice or palm wine or an Angkor Beer.
- Traditional dessert stalls serve up shaved ice and condensed milk with fruit, egg pudding, sticky rice and other delights.
- Sugar cane squeezed through a grinder makes a great drink and gives a quick energy boost on a hot day.
- Green coconut juice is another tasty thirst quencher.
