Things to do in Cambodia

Cambodia is a country that does have a dark past, but any visitor to this stunning place will see this is overshadowed by the amazing culture and spirit of its people. The Khmer people have been in this land for thousands of years, evident in the countless temples and ruins that are scattered throughout the country. They even have the longest alphabet in the world!

phnompenhmekongtourA lot of people arrive in Cambodia via Phnom Penh, the capital city. Its location is the meeting point of three great waterways – the Mekong, Tonle Sap and Bassac. In the 1920’s the city was known as the Pearl of Asia and boasts a population of over 2 million, with temples (knows as Wats), festivals and celebrations all year round.

Rich in ancient history the city does not forget some of the horrific times in recent history, and a trip to the Genocide Museum is a humbling and moving experience. A Phnom Penh tour with a local guide gives a unique insight into their past, and present culture.

You can’t come to Phnom Penh and not experience the mighty Mekong River. This Mekong sunset tour shows the vibrant way of life hub of local life and industry that is supported through this iconic waterway.

In the city itself why not take in some local markets and enjoy some Khmer snacks on a Phnom Penh cyclo tour.

From Phnom Penh to Siem Reap a great way to travel is up the Tonle Sap via long boat. It’s a great way to see the countryside, and is quite affordable. However, be wary as during dry season (December – March) you may need to check conditions, as boats mat not be able to make the whole journey.

siemreapangkortourSiem Reap is the home to one of the true ancient wonders of the world – Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples of the region. Like stepping back in time, many of these archaeological wonders went abandoned and lost for centuries, and are now in danger due to the high volume of tourists now visiting every year.

A different Angkor tour that takes in the amazing temples and local villages of Angkor is on a bike. Off the beaten track a little from the mass tourism crowds, you even visit a local village and enjoy a shadow puppet performance. This Angkor cycle tour is a great way to get a feel for the village way of life, as well as seeing some of the iconic temples along the way.

With many local Siem Reap Tours on offer, there is a tour of Tonle Sap that gives a unique insight into the local way of life. There is no better adventure than exploring this lake where countless locals call home. Meeting locals and visiting monasteries adds to the experience when you take our Tonle Sap Cultural Tour.

So when you do travel to Cambodia, be sure to dig a little deeper and uncover this ancient culture, and make sure you see this timeless country and people whilst travelling responsibly.
