Tips on having a great local experience
- Talk to people, the locals will love it and won’t be offended if you stop them in the street.
- Have some patience, things are often done at a slower pace than you will find at home. This is part of the joy of being in Cambodia.
- Keep an open mind as things may not be what you expect.
- Travel on some local transport while you are here; it is cheaper and a great way to meet local people.
- Explore in the non tourist areas, you will experience much more than staying around the commercial sights.
- Bring American dollars, you can change them into local money in the markets, or there are plenty of ATMs in the major towns and cities. Travellers cheques are often hard to change.
- Change some dollars into small denominations of reil (local currency), you may need it for smaller purchases, as small local businesses do not carry a lot of spare cash especially in the more rural areas. Using local currency is beneficial for the local economy.
- Try food from the street and local restaurants, it is often tastier, definitely cheaper and always freshly cooked.
- Read up on the local culture so you don't make big faux pas!
- Don’t expect everything to be the same as at home because it won't be! This is why you came!
